that occurred at sandy hook elementary school, the cities, states and now president of looking for ways to stem violence what. what took place in connecticut was not the only reason i began working on this legislation. oftentimes it takes a national tragedy to create significant among them and political pressure around the issue of gun violence. but, what is getting missed in these debates is that the reality is that these tragedies associated with gun violence take place every single day in our neighborhoods all across the country. i know all too well what this tragedy looks like. i experienced it every time every time i get a phone call in the middle of the night for the police department alerting me of another violent crime are shooting. families as they grieve. i experience it every time i go to san francisco general hospital to console the victims of gun violence, last year a victim as young as five years old. we continue to address the causes and impact of this senseless gun violence. increasingly involves young adults under the age of 25; often related to disputes over turf and

to go in different direction. the unfortunate and very tragic incident in connecticut in sandy hook elementary school of course heightened everybody's awareness of what violence can really be all about. and as we have been not only responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something ab

the first responders who did what they could at sandy hook elementary. i was called to respond to the bombing of the federal building in oklahoma city. i spent one month investigating that senseless attack that culminated in the death of 160 americans and 19 children under the age of six. i was never the same. it is likely that the victims and survivors from newton will never be the same. do not forget the first responders. they need your help. today, we have a choice. we can maintain the status quo by putting our faith in gunfighters, the good guy we hope will prevail over the bad guy with a gunman, or we remove the obstacles that challenge our crime fighters from preventing them from ever getting a gun in the first place. people who sell guns and encourage you to place your faith in the gunfighters. this is not surprising. the fact that you can work as a fire arm without pausing a criminal background check is a flaw so large that it makes many gun laws meaningless and it distorts the fundamental effect the best of atf and every police department in the nation. as a crime figh
